Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson will speak on a tour across the
state of Missouri from Tuesday, March 16 through Saturday, March 20.
Governor Johnson is a Republican who served two terms as Chief Executive
of the state of New Mexico.
Even while he was in office, Governor Johnson was an outspoken critic of
the “war on drugs” and an advocate for reform. During his presentations
in our state, he will urge our state’s Republican legislators to do as New
Mexico has done and adopt a medical marijuana law. He will also urge a
reduction of reliance on incarceration for non-violent offenders in
general and, specifically, for marijuana defendants.
All of these events are open to the general public. Governor Johnson will
speak on Tuesday, March 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the University of Missouri at
Kansas City Law School in the Student Lounge. His presentation there is
sponsored by the Federalist Society, a conservative/libertarian
organization of law students.
On Wednesday, March 17, Governor Johnson will travel to our state capitol
in Jefferson City and will meet with legislative leaders there to urge
support for House Bill 1670, the medical marijuana legislation now pending
before the Missouri General Assembly. We hope that he will have an
opportunity to meet with House Speaker Ron Richard and urge him to assign
that bill to a committee so that it may be heard.
On Thursday morning, March 18, Governor Johnson will be interviewed on
Columbia radio station KFRU, the largest talk station between Kansas City
and St. Louis. That afternoon he will meet with the editor and publisher
of the Columbia Daily Tribune, the largest newspaper between Kansas City
and St. Louis. Thursday evening, Governor Johnson will speak at the
University of Missouri at Columbia Law School in room 5 or 6 in the lower
level. His presentation there will be sponsored by the MU NORML Chapter.
On Friday, March 19, Governor Johnson will speak at noon to the
Muleskinners, a progressive Democratic party club, at Stephens College in
the lower level of Stamper Commons in Columbia. On the evening of Friday,
March 19, Governor Johnson will speak to the Mid-Missouri Chapter of the
American Civil Liberties Union at the Top of the Tiger Hotel. The doors
open at 6:00 p.m. and Governor Johnson will speak shortly after 7:00 p.m.
On the afternoon of Saturday, March 20, Governor Johnson will speak at the
Washington University Law School in St. Louis. His presentation there is
sponsored by the greater St. Louis Chapter of NORML. He will be joined by
Mayor Don Yarber of Cottleville, Missouri. Mayor Yarber led the
successful effort to persuade the City Council in that town to endorse the
passage of a statewide medical marijuana legislation. Also speaking will
be attorney John Coffman, lobbyist for the American Civil Liberties Union
in the Missouri General Assembly. Mr. Coffman is a former Columbia City
Council member and former Public Counsel for the state of Missouri under
both the Holden and Blunt administrations.
The tentative schedule for the speakers that afternoon is as follows:
John Coffman at 3:10 p.m., followed by Mayor Don Yarber at 3:50 p.m. and
Governor Johnson will be speaking at 4:30 p.m.
On Saturday evening, NORML is sponsoring a fundraising dinner at Guido’s
on the Hill at 5046 Shaw Avenue in St. Louis. In addition to the dinner,
an auction of items to raise money for NORML will also take place at
Guido’s. Seating is limited to 40 people and will be available that
afternoon at the Washington University Law School.
We certainly hope you will be able to join us for one or more of the
appearances by Governor Johnson in Missouri during the next week.
